Hiring a lawyer to represent you is one of the single most important decisions you will make in regards to your case. When making the decision to hire a lawyer here are just a few questions you should ask:
|
|
|
-
How much experience does the lawyer have?
-
Does the lawyer handle other types of cases?
-
What percentage his or her practice does the lawyer spend working on the type of case you have?
-
Does the attorney have TRIAL experience?
-
Is the lawyer available to you?
-
Does the lawyer return phone calls?
-
What does the lawyer fee include, in detail? And can you have that in writing on the contract of employment?
-
Will the lawyer you meet with be the lawyer handling your case?
-
Who will be handling your case? Will it be the attorney or a paralegal?
-
Is the attorney familair with people in the system? Judges? Attorneys? Court Clerks? Prosecutors?

It is important that you feel comfortable with the attorney that you select. The communication and relationship between you and the attorney will be very important as you will be working closely with him or her throughout the duration of your case.
An attorney cannot give you a guarantee regarding the outcome of your case. The facts of each case are different. If an attorney is making promises or guarantees about the results of your case, you should be wary.
Make sure he or she is candid about the legal fee requirements. Before you leave his or her office you should understand exactly what the attorney fees cover. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER hire an attorney without getting a legal fee agreement in writing in the form of a formal contract. You might also ask if they have payment plans available.
An attorney should also be forthright with you about whether your situation requires his or her services in the first place.
